Amsoil did a little Blog on Ken’s Crazy Super Bee, which is in their booth at SEMA 2015.
Ken Ticknor of Team Hybrid knows a thing or two about cars and what it takes to make them stand out. His experience as a car show judge has lent insight to what turns an average ride into an award-winning showstopper, and he’s used that knowledge to his advantage. An avid auto enthusiast, Ticknor has steadily honed his craft over the course of several project vehicles since the early 90’s.
Ken’s latest (and greatest, noted below) project is a 2007 Dodge Charger Superbee that has taken its place in the AMSOIL booth at this week’s SEMA show. We reached out to Ken to learn a little more about him and his Superbee, which is also being featured in an upcoming AMSOIL advertisement forSuper Street and Motor Trend Magazines.
Congratulations on landing a spot at SEMA in the AMSOIL booth! Is this your first time at the show?
This will be my 3rd time at the SEMA show. My car had its debut in 2006 in the Cragers booth, and then returned the following year in 2007 for the Unique Wheels booth.
Tell us a bit about yourself and how your passion for vehicles came to be.
My passion for vehicles came to be when I was very little. My father was part of a car club called the Corvette Club and they used to race at Orange County International Raceway (OCIR).I was hooked forever.
Is this your first project vehicle?
After getting into the car scene in early 90’s, this car is my 5th build. I started with ‘67 RS Camaro, followed with a ‘76 corvette, ‘84 K5 blazer, 2005 Subaru STI and now my best so far to date; my 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 Superbee.
How long have you been a member of Team Hybrid?
I have been a member with Team Hybrid of six-plus years and I’m part of the SoCal Chapter. I wanted to be a part of the most respected team on thescene with the legendary Team Hybrid family. I contribute to the team with my humble attitude and experience of going to over 1,000 car shows throughout my years as a former car show judge. I know what they’re looking for, so I can help my teammates continue to win. The Hybrid Management, especially our Founder and President James Lin, has helped me with my build in several ways with great high-end sponsors and team exposure.
What makes this Superbee such a special car?
The Superbee is so unique for several reasons. Only 1,000 were made in 2007, and mine was the first Superbee sold in California. All my one-off custom parts and the detail I have put into the car have won me well over 100 first place trophies.
Where did you find this particular car? Is there a back story?
I got this car on accident. Originally I wanted a black STR8 Charger, but in the showroom I saw the crazy looking Superbee. I was working with a customizing shop, and Crager Wheels was looking for a SEMA booth car. I didn’t want to bring the car with just the wheels so I started my build, and a little over month later the sponsors rolled in.
What do you think has made this such a classic American car? What’s the big appeal?
I think what made this car such a classic American car is the big Hemi motor known for big horsepower. Also, the crazy graphics on this car originated in the early 70’s and people recognize the Superbee logo.
Do you have any prior experience with AMSOIL products?
I don’t have any prior experience with AMSOIL products until the last few years. I had always used conventional products and I didn’t realize how much difference a quality lubricant would make on my vehicles.
Anything else you would especially like to say about the car?
I would like to let people know my car would never be as sick as it is without the help of my friends, teammates and great sponsors. Without those three I would be just an average numbered car.
When you aren’t working on Super Bee or attending shows with Team Hybrid, what do you like to do in your spare time?
If I’m not working on the Superbee, besides work, I have a big passion for the UFC. In watching and attending super fights, I have a lot of respect for the fighters and how hard it is to be on top.
Where can we find more information about you, the build and the team?
A good source to find about the build and the team is out website www.teamhybrid.com, Facebook teamhybrid1995 or at our instagram @teamhybrid_95. Our team has an open door policy so if one is interested or to join, please visit our website or email [email protected]
